Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.’s National Day of Reading highlights the Fraternity’s enduring commitment to education and youth development. For the Gainesville (FL) Alumni Chapter, this observance is not a stand-alone event, but a visible extension of a year-round literacy strategy rooted in consistency, partnership, and measurable impact.

During this year’s National Day of Reading, the Gainesville Alumni Chapter engaged 193 students across 16 classrooms at two partner schools, working alongside 20 faculty and staff members to promote literacy, comprehension, and a love of reading. Alumni Brothers led interactive reading sessions, facilitated student discussions, and reinforced the importance of literacy as a foundation for academic success and lifelong learning.

While the National Day of Reading serves as a focal point, the Chapter’s literacy efforts continue throughout the year through monthly reading initiatives aligned with classroom instruction. These sustained engagements allow the Chapter, along with undergraduates and Silhouettes, to move beyond one-day service toward meaningful, relationship-based impact. Collectively, the Chapter’s literacy programming reaches more than 275+ youth annually through 28 engagements across three partner schools, reflecting a deliberate commitment to scale, access, and continuity.

Central to this work is the Chapter’s focus on Elevating the B.R.A.N.D., particularly the pillar of Relationships. By cultivating consistent, trust-based partnerships with educators, administrators, and families, the Gainesville Alumni Chapter ensures literacy programming is responsive, relevant, and sustainable. This relationship-centered approach strengthens school communities while reinforcing the Fraternity’s Guide Right mandate.

“Literacy is not just about reading books—it’s about building relationships that support our youth every day,” said Brother Bratcha J. Kellum, Polemarch of the Gainesville (FL) Alumni Chapter. “By showing up consistently, we’re able to create lasting partnerships that help students see reading as a pathway to opportunity.”

By nesting National Day of Reading activities within an ongoing literacy framework, the Gainesville (FL) Alumni Chapter aligns local service with Grand Chapter priorities and the Southern Province’s emphasis on sustainable community impact. Through disciplined planning and year-round execution, the Chapter remains committed to advancing literacy as a pathway to opportunity, empowerment, and lifelong learning for the youth it serves.
